Thursday Evening Discovery Trail

Hello everyone,

The latest weather reports indicate a risk of thunderstorms on Thursday, with stormy showers arriving from the western plains as early as midday, likely to sweep across a large part of the region through late afternoon and early evening.

In the mountains, this type of situation may be accompanied by potentially dangerous phenomena: electrical activity, risk of electrocution, lightning, heavy rainfall, hail, and strong wind gusts .

Our intention is clear: to hold the Discovery Trail if conditions allow it.

However, our responsibility remains to never compromise the safety of participants, volunteers, and the teams involved.

The initial course starts at nearly 2,000 meters of altitude and, from the very first kilometers, follows mountain areas that are particularly exposed. We must therefore exercise the utmost caution.

This vigilance is all the more important because the Discovery Trail is designed to allow many participants to discover trail running and the mountains. Not all of them necessarily have extensive experience in this type of environment, and we do not wish to place them in a potentially difficult situation.

Another important constraint concerns transporting participants to the start. This is done via the ski lifts, which may be stopped at any time by the operator in case of thunderstorm risk. This constraint is naturally part of the elements considered in our analysis.

Scenarios Considered

To adapt to the evolving situation, three scenarios are currently planned.

Plan A

Initial Course

Event maintained on the originally planned course.

Plan B

Alternative Course

Implementation of a course entirely located at lower altitudes, starting from the resort’s snow front, approximately 7 km and 400 m of positive elevation gain, with an effort comparable to the initial course.

Plan C

Cancellation

Cancellation of the event if no course can be organized under satisfactory safety conditions.

Decision Protocol

Our intention is to keep as many options open as possible, following the evolution of forecasts and weather observations until the last moment.

A decision on the chosen scenario will be made on Thursday around 5:00 p.m., subject to rapid changes in weather conditions.

If Plan A is chosen, transportation of participants by gondola will begin at 5:30 p.m..
If Plan B or Plan C is chosen, participants will be informed directly on-site during bib collection and through the speaker’s announcements.
Information will also be relayed on the event’s digital platforms.
